UPSC Civil Service Exam Questions - Engineering

Q1:

A brick masonry wall of nominal thickness 200 mm carries an axial load of 26 kN/m and another load of 19 kN/m acting at an eccentricity of 45 mm. The resultant eccentricity and eccentricity ratio are respectively

A 19 mm, 0.095

B 19 mm, 1.00

C 22 mm, 1.10

D 24 mm, 1.20

ANS:A - 19 mm, 0.095

Always remember eccentricity ratio can never be more than 0.50.
Resultant eccentricity = [(26*0)+(19*45)]/(26+19) = 19.
and eccentricity ratio = 19/200 = 0.095.
