Q1:

Degree of saturation of a natural soil deposit having water content 15%, specific gravity 2.50 and void ratio 0.5, is

A 50%

B 60%

C 75%

D 80%

ANS:C - 75%

Se=wg or e=wg/s
0.15 * 2. 5/0.5 = 75% Degree of saturation (Sr) = wG/e.
= 0.15 x 2.5/0.5,
= 0.75,
= 75%. As We Know That,
Se = WG.
Where S = Degree of saturation; e = void ratio; W = water content; G = Specific gravity.

So, W = 15% = 0.15 e = 0.5 and G = 2.50
Hence S = WG/e = 0.15 * 2.50/0.5 = 0.75.

But degree of saturation is expressed in % so S = 75% answer. The relation between water content, degree of saturation, specific gravity and void ratio is given by Se=WG (or) s = WG/e.
