Q1: If an element of a stressed body is in a state of pure shear with a magnitude of 80 N/mm2 , the magnitude of maximum principal stress at that location is

A 80 N/mm2

B 113.14 N/mm2

C 120 N/mm2

D 56.57 N/mm2

ANS:A - 80 N/mm2

For pure shear:

Stress in x-direction is 0.
Stress in y-direction is 0.

Maximum principal stress:

(σ x + σ y)/2 + (1/2)* {√( σ x - σ y)^2 + 4(shear stress)^2 }

So, Ans = 80N/mm^2.
