STPP is derived from orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) and sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na2CO3) through a reaction that results in the formation of a polyphosphate chain. Its chemical structure consists of three phosphate groups (PO4) linked by oxygen atoms, forming a linear chain. Due to its ability to sequester calcium and magnesium ions, STPP is commonly used as a water softener in detergents. By binding to these ions, it prevents them from interfering with the cleaning action of detergents and helps to improve their effectiveness in removing dirt and stains from fabrics and surfaces.
