UPSC Civil Service Exam Questions - Engineering

Q1:

Tensile strength of concrete is measured by

A direct tension test in the universal testing machine

B applying compressive load along the diameter of the cylinder

C applying third point loading on a prism

D applying tensile load along the diameter of the cylinder

ANS:A - direct tension test in the universal testing machine

A) is absolutely wrong, because Flexural and Split tensile strength test both are an indirect method.

In Flexural tensile strength test:- Specimen is placed in the testing machine on two 38 mm diameter rollers with c/c distance of 600 mm. Then load is applied through two similar rollers mounted at the third points of supporting span i.e. spaced at 200 mm c/c.

Split tensile strength test:- The compression load is applied diametrically and uniformly along the length of the cylinder until the failure of the cylinder along the vertical diameter.

So option B) is correct.
