Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering

Q1: The consolidation time for soils

A increases with increasing compressibility

B decreases with increasing permeability

C increases rapidly with increasing size of soil mass

D is independent of the magnitude of the stress change.

E All the above.

ANS:E - All the above.

"av" is proportional to "mv", "mv" is inversely proporitonal to "Cv", "Cv" is inversely proportional to "t".

So, "t" increases with "av" increased. Compressibility means av (coefficient of compressibility) "av" is propertional to "mv", "mv" is inversely proporitonal to "Cv", "Cv" is inversely proportional to "t".

So as av increase mv increase and so cv decreases leading to increase of t i.e consolidation time. If soil compresses continuously then the consolidation process required to remove air from soil, therefore, consolidation time increase.

If soil doesn't compress then consolidation not required.
