UPSC Civil Service Exam Questions - Engineering

Q1:

The initial and final void ratios of a clay sample in a consolidation test are 1 and 0.5, respectively. If the initial thickness of the sample is 2.4 cm, then its final thickness will be

A 1.3 cm

B 1.8 cm

C 1.9 cm

D 2.2 cm

ANS:B - 1.8 cm

Total settlement (S) = change in void ratio/ (1+ intial void ratio) * thickness of layer.
So, S = 0.5 * 2.4/(1+1) = 0.6.

Then final thickness of layer = 2.4 - 0.6 = 1.8.
