GATE Exam Questions

Q1: The width of expansion joint gap is 2.5 cm in a cement concrete pavement. The spacing between expansion joints for a maximum rise in temperature of 25°C is, (assuming coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete as 10 x 10-6 per degree C),

A 5 m

B 50 m

C 100 m

D 25 m

ANS:A - 5 m

It would be 50m

Solution- width of expansion joint = 2.5cm.

Now both sides slab starts expand so we have to take (2.5/2) width of expansion for a single slab length.

Now expansion due to thermal.
1.25 = 10x10^-6xLx25.
L = 50m.
