GATE Exam Questions

Q1: Two footings, one circular and the other square, are founded on the surface of a purely cohesionless soil. The diameter of the circular footing is same as that of the side of the square footing. The ratio of their ultimate bearing capcities is

A 3/4

B 4/3

C 1.0

D 1.3

ANS:D - 1.3

Area of circular footing = π/4 d2.
= 0.785 d2.

Area of square = d2(because d=l).
Bearing capacity = load/area.
Circular = load/0.785d2.
Square. = load/d2.

Ratio = load/0.785d2*d2/load.
= 1/0.785,
= 1.27.
= 1.30.
